Twenty years after his wife gave him a surprise 50th birthday trip on our vintage bus Maurice Kirkham was back again, this time to celebrate his 70th.
Even the fact that he has since retired, with wife Cathy to Prestatyn, didn’t deter his family from giving Maurice, who is a keen West Midlands bus enthusiast, a return trip down Memory Lane on the very same 1954 Daimler bus that he travelled on some twenty years ago.
“The whole family knows just how much Dad enjoyed that surprise birthday bus trip,” commented his son Andrew Kirkham. “We originally contacted you to see if we could get hold of your internal newsletter about that visit. Not only did you do that but you also invited us back to do the trip all over again as another surprise for Dad.”
Well, as our photographs show four generations of the Kirkham family turned out for that surprise visit to Yardley Wood garage and they all enjoyed a return trip on our vintage bus to Acocks Green garage and back.
There was even one more birthday surprise for Maurice when we revealed that we had dedicated and named bus number 1909 to ‘Maurice Kirkham - bus enthusiast.’
Since returning home Andrew has emailed us to say: “On behalf of all of the Kirkham family we can’t thank NXWM staff enough for their time and effort to make our dad’s 70th birthday so special.
“With special thanks to Tony Hunter and Andy Lunn and all those involved behind the scenes that we just didn’t get to thank in person. You should all be so very proud to have staff that are so committed to your company.”
